Volkswagen Type 1, more commonly known as the Beetle or Bug, is an economy car model produced by the German car manufacturer Volkswagen from 1938 until 2003. Although the names "Beetle" and "Bug" is received by the public in a very short time, only in August 1967 did VW Beetle uses the name for the U.S. market. In Britain, VW never used the name Beetle officially. Previously it was only known to either the "Type I" or 1200, 1300 or 1500, which is the name used in the European market: the number refers to the engine size in cubic centimeters. In 1998, after the original model had long stopped production for most of the world market (but still produced in Mexico until 2003) VW introduced the "New Beetle" (built on the Volkswagen Golf platform), featuring cosmetic resemblance to the original appearance.
